Where to go for a top afternoon tea

Before we begin with this week’s blog, let’s take a moment to be thankful for the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who back in the 1800s when two meals a day was the norm, she decided to set a daily time to have an afternoon snack. And behold, afternoon tea was born. Now, this English tradition is becoming even more popular than ever in restaurants, hotels and beautiful tea rooms offering all kinds of delightful treats. So, fancy something quirky? Here are or recommendations for London’s top afternoon tea locations.

First, we’re heading to Mayfair to Brown’s Hotel which is well-known for being home of the elegant tea room that Queen Elizabeth used to enjoy her afternoon break. Although, expect something different to the usual jam scones. In a world where looking after your health is seen as essential, this tea room uniquely offers lighter afternoon snacks. If you want to treat yourself without feeling guilty or swimming the extra lengths at the gym, try the low-carb, low-fat and low-sugar substitutes, such as fruit sorbet and dark chocolate, yoghurt-topped orange cakes. Choose from a variety of light bites, salads and of course, the traditional sandwiches. Complement the delicious delicacies with a classic cup of tea or you can throw in a glass of low-calorie champagne for extra relaxation!

Ever wondered what it would be like to have tea at The Ritz? Since the year 1906 when the lavish hotel opened, The Ritz Carlton has been serving the English luxury to guests and if you are looking for an experience of true heritage, you will not be disappointed. The Ritz is widely recognized for its formality and the graciousness of staff is a considerable part of the afternoon tea service. The dress code is strictly no jeans or trainers allowed in the gleaming and glamorous Palm Court for afternoon tea and expect some classy musical entertainment throughout the week, so gentlemen fish out your best jacket and ladies find your favourite shoes, because it’s time to dress to impress! The Ritz offers various afternoon tea packages. It’s a tough choice on the world’s most famous afternoon tea menu, with a mouth-watering selection of classic sandwiches such as the scrumptious smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise and cucumber with cream cheese. For something sweet, indulge on freshly-baked scones with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry preserve alongside a range of lush tea pastries and cakes. If you thought that there is only one type of tea, think again! Try something different from the list of 16 tea choices including mint infusion, lemon verbena and passionfruit and mango. Guaranteed to be a spectacular day to remember.

For those who are taking a day to explore London, how about enjoying a tasty afternoon tea…whilst floating along the Thames seeing all of the city’s favourite sites? The City Cruises River Thames tea is a fantastic combination of two must-do English experiences, boarding onto a sophisticated boat with wide windows ready for passengers to gaze out onto landmarks such as the Tower Bridge, The House of Commons, St. Paul’s Cathedral. Whilst you admire the fascinating view and giving jealous onlookers a wave, choose from an appetizing selection of sandwiches including ham and mustard, smoked salmon and chicken sandwiches. Additionally, satisfy your sweet tooth with the tiered stands holding mini eclairs and fruity tarts alongside macarons and scones with clotted cream and jam. A great idea for those who want to be immersed into English culture.
