A strictly no gluten diet is becoming more and more common in the UK for the benefit of good health. Many of us unfortunately suffer from conditions such as Celiac disease, allergies and sensitivity to foods containing gluten ingredients. An increase has been recorded of gluten being cut out as part of a fad diet or just due to a perception that life sans-gluten is a healthier life. Either way, there is one thing that they all have in common and that is the search to find gluten-free foods that are just as delicious and filling as the originals. Here at the Georgian House our kitchen experts are working hard to create tasty gluten-free breakfast recipes that are flavoursome, light and moreish! So far, our guests have been able to indulge on our famous gluten-free pancakes, eggs benedict and other little treats (such as the new coconut macaroons we got to try today). So, what can you do at home to spice up your gluten-free morning? Here we have some ideas that will brighten up your breakfast plate.
To begin, a particularly quirky recipe we came across is rated 5 stars on BBC Food and is ideal to make at the weekend after your well-earned lie in. Hash browns with Gruyère and pancetta sounds like a fancy pants dish, but it actually has a moderately easy recipe, will fill up 4 bellies and of course, there is no gluten in sight! Crucial ingredients include potatoes, an onion, garlic, pancetta, Gruyère and eggs. Preparation will take about 20 minutes and cooking is estimated to take 50 minutes (maybe longer if you have not made hash browns before) where the ingredients are cooked and combined to create this classic dish with a golden and crispy outside and a warm, fluffy inside. Of course, we all have different tastes, so why not throw some juicy tomatoes in there or soft mushrooms to add even more flavour? What’s more, this dish is full of nutritional value, such as your essential carbs for energy and protein.
If you’re thinking ‘this sounds great, but I don’t have the time’, then how about a similar recipe that will only take up a little bit of your busy day? With a cooking time of 30 minutes, the Basque-inspired breakfast dish, pancetta and pepper piperade (now try saying it very quickly!) is a really simple recipe with 3 easy steps. Step 1, cook your pancetta and onions. Step 2, add your peppers, tomatoes and tomato puree, season and cook for 10-15 mins. Step 3, make four holes and crack eggs into each of them and cook until set. Easy as pie-perade! If you don’t fancy this for breakfast, then perhaps whip it up for brunch, lunch or even for dinner and serve with whatever you like.
For the sweet-toothed out there, have no fear. There are so many different mouth-watering gluten-free breakfast ideas and we had a job picking the most delicious one to recommend! Of course, we do love our gluten-free pancakes, but that is not the only option for sweet treats at breakfast. An obvious answer to this, is fruit as there is plenty of choice to satisfy your sugar craving in the morning, so how about trying roasted stone fruits with vanilla? Cook time for this scrumptious compote is 20 minutes and it will definitely be worth the wait. Again, this is an easy-peasy recipe with only two actions. First, fish out your food blender and bundle in some sugar, vanilla, cardamom, lime zest and juice. Pile your chosen fruits (apricots, peaches and nectarines recommended) into a baking dish and generously pour on your sugary mixture. Next, roast in the oven for 20 minutes and make sure the sauce is nice and sticky. Serve up with some yoghurt and voila! Sugar craving eliminated.
Lastly, we understand that many of you may lead very hectic lives, whether you are working full-time or you have a family etc. and as important as a hearty breakfast is, it is also vital to keep yourself going through till lunch time and we have found the perfect solution. Lots of people who are always on the go often make themselves a nutritional smoothie before they head out for the day’s activities. As the summer season is only around the corner, we recommend a refreshing and vitalising fruit smoothie that is easy to make, is full of nutritional goodness and is guaranteed to keep your tummy from making strange noises at about 10 or 11am. What makes the perfect smoothie? Well, depending on your taste in fruit, whatever you want really! For a super quick and super healthy smoothie, defrost some frozen forest fruits, banana and some fruity yoghurt and give it all a whizz around in a processor. For a little more creative shake, mix up some banana, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries with apple juice or mineral water and drizzle some honey on top to add an extra sweet kick to the smoothie. We understand that craving chocolate is hard to ignore, so if you are feeling daring, whip yourself up an irresistibly creamy chocolate and peanut-butter smoothie that can be made with only 5 gluten-free ingredients. Grab yourself a banana, coconut milk, peanut-butter and cocoa, then watch it all whirl around in a blender before pouring into a cup and enjoying!
Who said a gluten-free diet can’t be indulgent? Cooking a gluten-free breakfast can turn out to be a lot of fun and we are continuing to widen our choice of options for our breakfast menu.
