Love inter-cultural London

London is one of the most culturally vibrant cities on Earth with an estimated over 300 different languages being spoken and 37% of its population born outside of the UK. What’s more, 84% of Londoners see the city’s cultural scene as essential for quality of life and we totally agree! London wouldn’t be the fascinating and thrilling location it is without the remarkable diversity it holds. Whether you’re a resident in or out of the city or if you are a tourist charmed by the capital, trust us when we say, there’s nowhere else like London. So, how can you immerse yourself into the cultural capital of the world this summer? Check out these exciting events happening in the city centre that absolutely anyone can be a part of.

Over the coming months, London will be hosting a variety of major events and one date to take down in the diary is the 23rd August. This year’s Notting Hill Carnival is set to light up West London yet again with dazzling costumes, energetic music and temptingly tasty food stalls and it simply can’t be missed! Expect the biggest street party in Europe to hold the colourful Caribbean theme with the usual parade of performers and steel bands; you’ll be edging to join in. Whether you want to dance along or watch the show, the carnival is guaranteed to allow you to see London in a completely different (and fun) light. As always, the pure Caribbean soul of the event brings a wonderful spirit of diversity to the streets of London and is an absolute must if you’re visiting London for vacation, you won’t be disappointed! Other exciting cultural events happening this sunny season include the Totally Thames Festival, the BBC Proms and many sporting events in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup.

In October this year, Trafalgar Square will be illuminated by the annual festival of Diwali, the celebration that attracts thousands to the city centre. This year, expect a programme full of traditional and contemporary music as well as professional dance performances, food stalls and fun activities for all the family. The Festival of Lights represents the victory of light over darkness and good over evil with a great significance to Sikh, Jain and Hindu communities symbolising love, joy, forgiveness, knowledge, reflection, resolution and light. This event will also offer the tempting chance to taste your way through delightful Asian cuisine with delicious vegetarian dishes along with festival sweets and drinks to liven up your taste-buds. The event is free to attend, so feel free to go along and celebrate the colourful festival!

Another free for all event occurring in Trafalgar Square on the 10 October, brings the essence of African culture and heritage to Central London and is set to be an exhilarating experience. Enjoy spectacular performances from African drummers, acrobats, dancers and a packed line up of singers on stage for Africa on the Square. The event celebrates Black History Month 2015 introduced by the Mayor of London as part of his Events for London programme and will showcase the very best of African culture. Watch, hear and taste the traditions of Africa and why not get yourself and even your family involved in the cool activities on offer, it will be a guaranteed fun day out.

Having said all this, you don’t have to attend special events to engage in the inter-cultural society. London is full of diverse restaurants, attractions, museums and many other cultural gems spread throughout the city. You can discover something new every day in the city and if you are a tourist with a love for London, this is the perfect excuse to keep coming back to visit!
