Festive family shows for a jolly holiday

The holidays are coming and we have no doubt that every youngster in town is eager to hear that final bell ring in the classroom, so that the festive fun can begin! London’s streets have lit up ready to celebrate Christmas, so now is the perfect time to make the most of all the exciting events going on. This week’s blog is dedicated to the parents who just don’t know how to keep the kids entertained until the big day comes, and among the abundance of activities across the capital, where better to start than the West End theatre!

Christmas just simply isn’t complete without a classic and comical theatre production that entertains the whole family whilst spreading the festive joy. The number of shows and pantomimes taking place across London is plentiful, so it’s impossible to miss out on the magic. If you haven’t heard already, one of the most adored Christmas movies that puts a smile on our faces every year, has been transformed into a stage show! We highly recommend the heart-warming and hilarious Elf The Musical, which has arrived here in the West End and has brought its enchanting Christmas spirit along with it. This adaption of the movie starring Will Ferrell has quickly become a smash hit featuring songs, costumes and dance created by the experts that brought us Annie, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and many more. The story is all about lovable and naïve Buddy the elf, who journeys from the North Pole to New York City in search of his birth father and true identity. With 4-star reviews from Evening Standard, The Times and The Independent, the production has been described as infectious, energetic and superb, a wonderful way to feel the festive spirit!

We all know the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserable man who despises the happiness of Christmas until he gets a surprise visit from three spooky ghosts of his past, present and future. A Christmas Carol, the unforgettable Charles Dickens masterpiece is being performed the Noel Coward Theatre in Covent Garden, bringing all of the memorable characters including Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit to life again. What you may not know however, is that the award-winning actor Jim Broadbent will be making his long-anticipated return to theatre and playing the role as Mr. Scrooge. After working on fantastic films such as The Iron Lady, Paddington and even one of the Harry Potter episodes, Broadbent will certainly not disappoint in portraying the character we all know, so don’t miss out on this seasonal treat.

For a real spectacular experience this year, we suggest taking a seat in the Royal Albert Hall that is receiving a total magical makeover ready to host the international dance sensation, The Nutcracker on Ice. For over 10 years, The Imperial Ice Stars having been wowing audiences across continents with standing ovations night after night and this year, they’re back in London. For a third season the troupe are returning to amaze you on 4,000 square feet of ice for only 12 performances at the Albert. It’s a quiet night on Christmas Eve, when young Marie witnesses a toy nutcracker come alive and is whirled into the world of the Mouse King, the Nutcracker Prince and the always-elegant Sugar Plum Fairy. With impressive projections, colourful costumes and of course astonishing acrobatics, The Nutcracker on Ice is guaranteed to take your breath away and entertain the whole family.

Lastly, how could we forget to mention everyone’s guilty pleasure that we all love whatever age we are? Lucky for us, London has got the brightest, silliest and funniest pantomimes ready to amuse the family. From Snow White and Cinderella to Robin Hood and Peter Pan, get ready to cheer on the goodies, boo at the baddies and shout ‘It’s behind you!’ now and again, whilst watching your little ones’ faces light up with joy. Would Christmas be the same without a panto? You guessed it, ‘Oh no it wouldn’t!’
