How to Get Around: Transport Links Guide in London

January 18, 2023 by Mark

London is on the top of many a bucket list, and why not? The city is great to visit, full of culture, history and art. However, the city also has the reputation of being complicated to navigate, which can be true if you don’t acquaint yourself with the transport available ahead of time. We’ve created the list below to help you get started finding your way around London.

Oyster Card is King

A Visitors Oyster Card is a quick and easy way to pay when you get on and off public transport while offering lower costs per trip. It’s also essential as some modes of transportation, such as buses, no longer accept cash, so a card or debit card is a must. However, using an international debit card will often hit you with fees, so avoiding these with an Oyster Card is best. For more information, visit the website.

The Underground

The London Underground rail, known as The Tube, is a great way to travel around central London, with a multitude of stops and stations that will have you zipping around quickly and easily. Some stations are near the surface, while others require an elevator trip (or several thousand steps) to get you to your deep subterranean station. These trains run regularly during the day but not every night – avoid getting caught out if you are planning a late night out.

London Buses

An iconic double-decker bus ride is a convenient and cheap way to travel around London while also providing plenty of sightseeing opportunities. Just be aware that London buses are card only with no cash payment available. Unlike other modes of London transport, a single bus journey costs £1.65 and covers multiple buses within one hour. An entire day is capped at £4.95, making bus travel economical.

Docklands Light Railway (DLR)

The driverless Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is undoubtedly an interesting travel experience, especially if you can get a seat up the front and feel like you’re the driver. The aboveground sections also provide some unique views of the city’s older and industrial parts, including the huge Tate and Lyle factory.

Riverboat Services

Travelling by the river is a great way to beat traffic and enjoy fantastic views of famous landmarks along the Thames. So jump aboard and head up or downstream, soaking in what the city looks like from the water.

London Overground

The London Overground is a network of suburban routes that will give more than a view of a tube tunnel for further out areas of London while also interchanging with the Underground. There are excellent services to the east and north while also connecting to major stations such as Victoria.

Plan Your Way Around

For more detailed information, including train times and journey planning, visit the Transport for London website. For accommodation central to transport links try Bower House Hotel, near Victoria Station. It’s a perfect location for those seeking a well-connected base that won’t cost the earth.

April 28, 2017 by ellie

Plan Your Perfect Summer Trip to the Capital

Thinking ahead to your summer holidays? With longer, sunnier days and events in full swing, London becomes one of the most exciting and vibrant cities to explore in summer. Whether you’re visiting for the culture, cuisine, shopping or family fun, there’s something here for everyone. Here’s why a summer escape to London should be at the top of your list.

Iconic History and World-Famous Sights

From Big Ben and Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London, the capital is home to some of the most famous landmarks in the world. Many historic attractions are open for tours, offering a glimpse into centuries of British heritage. Take in the skyline from the top of the London Eye, or cruise along the River Thames for a more relaxed perspective.

Did you know that the Crown Jewels are still stored at the Tower of London? Or that you can stroll to Buckingham Palace in just minutes from Georgian House? Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning to see more, London’s mix of history and modernity is truly timeless.

Unbeatable Shopping Experiences

From Harrods to Camden Market, London is a paradise for shoppers. Whether you love luxury boutiques or quirky vintage finds, there’s a district or market for you.

Don’t miss our City Shopping offer, which includes a £20 voucher to treat yourself at Harrods — perfect for picking up something special or indulging in a sweet treat at Godiva Café. For fresh produce, antiques and unique fashion, explore Borough Market, East Street Market or Camden.

London’s Lively Nightlife

When the sun sets, the city doesn’t slow down. From buzzing rooftop bars to quirky cocktail lounges, London nightlife is full of energy and variety.

Check out Shoreditch for eclectic clubs and music venues, or sip a martini at the stylish Connaught Bar, named one of the world’s best by Time Out. For something more experimental, head to White Lyan, known for its inventive drinks and distinctive vibe.

Prefer skyline views with your cocktail? Try Radio Rooftop, Vista Bar or the breathtaking Sky Garden.

Family Fun for All Ages

London is just as exciting for families as it is for solo travellers or couples. Dive into the deep at SEA LIFE London Aquarium, explore spooky stories at The London Dungeon, or experience the magic of a West End show.

Top family-friendly musicals include Matilda, The Lion King and Wicked, all within easy reach of Georgian House. Plus, most museums and landmarks offer activities designed to engage younger visitors.

Dining That Delivers Every Time

Food lovers are spoilt for choice in London. Whether you’re after Michelin-starred fine dining, a late-night street food bite, or a traditional pub lunch, you’ll find it all just steps away.

A few of our favourites near Georgian House include:

  • Grumbles – a cosy bistro in Pimlico serving British–French classics.
  • Kazanin Victoria – authentic Turkish cuisine inspired by 13th-century recipes.
