When you hear the words ‘summer holiday’, do you immediately think of whisking your family away to an exotic destination far away from home with the sun shining bright, comfortable loungers waiting for you and lots of fun activities to keep the kids busy? Let’s be honest, many of us imagine these wonderful things and it is a great experience for children to explore the world and the cultures within. However, what we sometimes forget, is that the perfect summer holiday can even be spent in a vibrant city, just like London! Our blog this week is to help find you some exciting plans with your family for the summer before it flies away and the clouds start to creep their way back over our skies.
The capital is jam-packed with cool things to get up to this month and with a little bit of luck, the sun will be joining us in making the most of the season. If you are wondering about where to take your toddler, take a trip to Stratford’s Discover Children’s Story Centre where each week, lots of fun, themed activities are lined up for the little ones to discover their creative sides. Daily from 12.30-2.30pm, let your child be captivated by a special story reading and then be thrilled by a treasure hunt followed by craft activities. Occurring until September 6th, treat your youngster to an afternoon of entertainment and learning. If you feel like giving your child even more of a surprise, take them to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park this Saturday to the 2.5 metre high story-telling snail (you’ll believe it when you see it). For kids aged 4-11, this gentle giant holds a generous space to take a seat and listen to stories with the theme of home and belonging. The event is totally free and the quirky venue will be sure to put a smile on that little face.
For families with not so little children, London has of course always been home to some of the greatest museums in the world with exhibitions that you simply can’t see anywhere else. What’s more, the whole family can be intrigued by what some of the locations have to offer. The obvious choices, if you have never considered before, would be to pay a visit to the notorious Natural History Museum where you can gaze upon the ancient bones of the famous Diplodocus towering over as you enter, or experience a 3D adventure meeting some of the planet’s earliest inhabitants. This museum offers a fantastic day out exploring the Earth’s fascinating past with chances to get involved in workshops and take something away with you from the gift shop. To find out more about London’s history, take a tour within the walls of the London Dungeon and uncover the hidden truths about the chilling tales…if you dare. Dive under the surface at the Sea Life London Aquarium and be opened up to the ocean world. Look a great-white shark in the eye, watch the magnificent sea-turtles glide through the blue water and learn about the mesmerizing stingrays. However, do be warned that the penguins are so cute, you will want to take one home and it is likely that their carers will say ‘you wish – jellyfish!’
For the near grown-ups of the family, they may be simply too cool for these activities. So, why not treat your family to a spectacular show? There is an abundance of choice in London of performances that will completely blow your mind! Recommendations we can give include the magical Mamma Mia, Billy Elliot, the Lion King and the musical phenomenon that is just around the corner from our door, Wicked! You could even make a whole day of it as London is always waiting to be explored. See the famous sites of the city including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and perhaps take a ride on the London Eye. It is safe to say that if you have three or more children in each of these age groups, then you would have no problem filling up this summer month!
