2015 is set to be full of exciting theatre performances lighting up the stages of London, all the way from Phantom of the Opera to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. London is renowned for its spectacular musicals and the show is certainly going on this year with many of the current favourites and some rumoured new entries to join the West End community. Here’s what we think is worth the watch this season…
Everyone is talking about the astounding, award-winning musical that has taken the city by storm, The Jersey Boys. This captivating story follows the four principle characters: Frankie, Tommy, Bob and Nick, all members of the 1960s band, The Four Seasons that saw great success and a gloomy break-up. The true tale is structured as ‘four seasons’ with each of the four characters telling their perspective of their history and music. Famous songs that you are bound to recognize include “Working My Way Back To You” (which I now cannot get out of my head), “Stay” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry” among more. The show has remarkably won 5 awards including for Best New Musical in 2009 and it was certainly well deserved! The prestigious show based at the Piccadilly Theatre has received rave reviews and has been branded as electric, magical, moving and funny with toe-tapping tunes and a story full of heart. Book your tickets now for a night full of razzmatazz!
Next up on the top shows to see this year is one that we have definitely know, particularly if you have already seen the 2008 film version (which I have around 30 times). This musical is mostly famous for the ultimate feel-good songs that just make you want to get up and dance. Mamma Mia! is currently homed by the Novello Theatre in Aldwych, though set on an exotic Greek island where a mother and a daughter get into a bit of a pickle when three possible fathers show up to attend the daughter’s wedding! The timeless ABBA songs are celebrated throughout with characters that you can’t help but love. Mamma Mia! is sure to enchant you and is a must-see performance that may result in a speedy booking of a trip to Greece!
Thirdly, another musical that has been consistently taking our breath away is the one, the only, the literally thrilling, Thriller Live. This show is currently at the Lyric Theatre and is an exciting celebration of the notorious king of pop, Michael Jackson and takes you on an exhilarating journey through the performer’s musical history. Expect non-stop legendary hits including “Smooth Criminal” and “The Way You Make Me Feel”, the classic dance moves with a choreographic twist and colourful staging and costumes that will definitely send you moonwalking back home.
These are just a few of so many musicals happening in the city. Other notable performances include the incredible Billy Elliot, the sinister Sweeney Todd, the all-things Irish Lord of the Dance and the magical Matilda. There is something for everyone and with Mother’s Day coming up, what better idea to treat her to a day out in London and watch a fabulous performance? See: for more stunning shows.
